Why This Matters
On any blockchain, validators are responsible for validating and adding new blocks to the chain. However, it’s not always realistic for validators to be active and online 100% of the time. Sometimes their infrastructure goes down, which could be due to network issues, power outages, or maintenance. This is why it’s standard to have a built-in window of acceptable validator downtime, with the intention of striking a balance of disincentivizing downtime and mitigating attack vectors, while allowing some time for temporary issues to resolve. For this update we are moving from an unsigned block window of 500 blocks to 1000 blocks.
